Portland Bowls Club are a long-established friendly small club. Their home ground is on Sutton Lawn. There is parking next to the entrance to the green, and are surrounded by the lovely Lawn park.&nbsp;
Players numbers vary yearly, with their current status at approx. 20 members. Competitive matches are played Monday and Wednesday evenings, and Saturday afternoons, with other time which can be spent for practicing.&nbsp;
Bowls is a very relaxing game, good steady exercise and is very easy to learn. The club welcome anyone who wishes to come and try the game, both experienced players and beginners.
Why not try it yourself or get some friends or colleagues together for a couple of hours, all you need is a flat pair of shoes, all other equipment and bowls will be provided, coaching will be available all for free.

Mill Waters is found between Ashfield and Mansfield and covers three public open spaces providing a snapshot of the industrial, social, and natural heritage along the River Maun Corridor. The three connected sites at Mill Waters offer more than 70 hectares to walk, run, and cycle. Visitors can try out many recreational activities including tennis, a skate park, play facilities, and outdoor fitness, within a relaxing, friendly environment. Mill Waters

Brierley Forest Park is a haven for wildlife offering nature walks covering over two miles, as well as cycling trails and a route for horse riders. The Green Flag award winning park covers 78 hectares through woodlands, hay meadows, streams, and wetland areas. It has a wide variety of facilities, including a lake with fishing platforms, mountain bike track, children’s play area, picnic area, and sculpture trail.

Visitors can also discover wildlife and birdlife including foxes, owls, meadow pipits, lapwings, blue tit birds and a large population of skylarks that nest on the former spoil tip. The wildflower meadows at the park include species such as yarrow and ox-eye daisy. The history The park, which officially opened in 1994, is located on former farmland and the site of Sutton Colliery. There are several reminders of the site’s coal mining past, through the timber miner sculptures outside the visitor centre, the commemorative stone on Rooley Tops, and the pit wheels along the main path to Brierley Waters. Within the visitor centre, there are displays illustrating the site’s history. Opening times The park and car park are open 24 hours. Annesley is a civil parish that is part of the district's <a href="/places-to-visit/hidden-valleys">Hidden Valleys</a> area, which has many walking and cycling trails set in beautiful countryside scenery. Annesley

The romantic ruins of this historic church and churchyard, registered as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, offer an idyllic location overlooking <a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" href="/stories/annesley-parkland/" title="Annesley Hall and Park">Annesley Hall and Park</a>. The Grade I listed church, dating back to the 12th century, is a haven for plants such as the purple orchid and coral fungus, and wildlife including several bat species, green woodpeckers, and barn owls. <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/wyspnp3s/annesley-hall-1.jpg?mode=max&amp;anchor=&amp;width=500" alt="The building of Annesley Hall on a bright sunny day" width="500" height="375">The tranquil Grade II* listed park is nestled in the midst of Annesley Forest, where you can find the site of a former motte-and-bailey castle. Enjoy the extensive rural views across Annesley Park, with its many varieties of wildflowers and birdlife. The history of the area Members of the Chaworth Musters family, who lived at Annesley Hall, are buried inside the church and adjoining graveyard. Nottinghamshire author D.H. Lawrence also mentioned the church in his first novel The White Peacock (1911). <a href="/stories/lord-byron/" title="Lord Byron">Lord Byron</a> was a regular visitor at the hall and church, and views of Annesley Park can be seen from nearby Diadem Hill – the assumed location of Byron’s poem, The Dream. Annesley is described by Byron as: “Where my thoughtless childhood stray’d…” and was an inspiration for much of his work. The church overlooks the Grade II listed Annesley Hall, which together with its connections to the Chaworth Musters and Byron families, was also linked to the Spencer and Churchill families. The Annesley Old Church Project The ruins of the church were restored through a three-year Heritage Lottery-funded project secured by Ashfield District Council with funding totalling £450,000 in 2011. Apart from the preservation of the site, the project also promoted community events and activities through the help of local residents and the Friends of Annesley Old Church. Creative writing workshops and arts events were held, as well as the Annesley Heritage Walks and research into the church history and surrounding district. Audio listening posts and information boards were also installed, so visitors can learn about the history of the church. Opening times The church and churchyard are open throughout the year. Annesley Old Church

There are some great opportunities for angling in the Ashfield area and beyond. A group for adults and young anglers, Ashfield Angling Club has a venue at <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.ashfieldangling.com/cauldwell_dam.php" target="_blank">Cauldwell Dam</a>, in Sutton in Ashfield. <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/bcnl3ndv/angling-at-brierley-forest-park-1.jpg?mode=max&amp;anchor=&amp;width=500" alt="Two anglers at the lake at Brierley Forest Park" width="500" height="375">This is one of Ashfield's oldest venues and has a pear-shaped pond of around two and half acres with fish including bream, perch, and carp. This Rugby Union Football Club has teams for men and women, and the chance for players to train from a young age with the Juniors and the Minis. Bagthorpe village

Believe Academy's aim is to build confidence, courage, and self esteem, through the medium of dance and life skills coaching. The route A 90-minute walking trail around the boundary of Brierley Forest Park, which due to its flat terrain is considered an easy hike at the green space. Take in the beautiful surroundings of this historic park, and stop off at the café for some light bites and beverages to break up the walk. Boundary Walk

The route There are plenty of stopping points on this circular three-hour route that takes in many places associated with Romantic poet <a href="/stories/lord-byron">Lord Byron</a>. Places to visit Starting at <a href="/places-to-visit/st-mary-magdalene-church">St Mary Magdalene Church</a>, in Hucknall, walkers can pay homage to the burial place of poet Lord Byron and his daughter, <a href="/stories/ada-lovelace">Ada Lovelace</a>. Visitors can also admire the building's beautiful stain-glassed windows and next to the church find the statue of Byron located high above street level in the wall of the old Co-op building. High Level Walk

Boccia is a Paralympic sport very similar to boules and pétanque, but you play your shot from the sitting position so that everyone plays from an equal perspective. Hucknall Boccia Group gather every Friday at 12.30pm in the main sports hall at Hucknall Leisure Centre. Kings Mill Reservoir

There is also a skate park, parkour area, bowling green, bandstand, rose garden, and for something to eat and drink head to Acre Café. The history The park was laid out in 1930 on land sold to Kirkby in Ashfield District Council, by Miss Catherine Hodgkinson of Kirkby House, to be used as a public playing field for the community. Prior to this the site was grazing land for horses and locally known as 16 Acre Field. Linby village

The mill has a fascinating history and is a Grade II listed building created in the 1820s by farmer, miller, and baker James Lindley. The history and restoration Built to replace a post mill damaged by a gale in 1818, the mill fell into disuse in the early 1900s. Prior to that it provided flour for bread and animal feed for livestock. All that remains is the stone tower that was restored in 2014 from Heritage Lottery funding that was used for new windows and a roof, and a small heritage centre. A wooden floor was also fitted in 2015, partially funded by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (Mills Section). In September 2023, the flat roof of the building was replaced for a conical roof to help prevent water damage and the floor inside the mill was replaced. Lindley's Mill

The route Take a wander around the magnificent countryside around the Annesley Park estate, which was once the ancestral home of the Chaworth-Musters family. This area inspired two of the county's most famous authors, Romantic poet <a href="/stories/lord-byron">Lord Byron</a> and novelist <a href="/stories/dh-lawrence">D.H. Lawrence</a>. There are surfaced paths and moderate gradients on this route, making it an ideal one for hiking beginners. The country park that surrounds the lakes continues nearby on the other side of Bestwood Village offering the chance to visit historic places of interest. Nature Walk trail

<a rel="noopener" href="https://newsteadabbey.org.uk/" target="_blank">Newstead Abbey</a> is known as the ancestral home of Romantic poet <a href="/stories/lord-byron">Lord Byron</a> and has a fascinating historic house, gorgeous gardens, and 300 acres of parkland to explore. Found in the Nottinghamshire village of Ravenshead, Sir John Byron was given permission in 1540 by King Henry VIII to convert the former Augustinian priory into a country house. Pleasley and the Five Pits cycle trail

Located on the edge of Kirkby in Ashfield, this tranquil park is ideal for taking a walk along the historic woodland paths and discovering an abundance of wildlife. The history Portland Park has woodland, grassland, and a number of wetland areas found in the valley of a tributary of the River Erewash, bounded by used and disused railway lines. The meadow area was once a limestone quarry, which was infilled during the 1950s and the park is known locally as ‘The Quarries’. The site is based on a band of magnesium limestone that enables many rare plant species to grow, making it a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Portland Park

The Grade II* listed St Helen's Church in Selston was created in 1150 AD, and the front of the building was updated in 1899. Worth a visit for its architecture, the historical destination also has a monolith in its churchyard suggesting the site was used for pagan worship before the church was created. In November 2024, the Planetarium, along with the original observatory, opened its doors and welcomed its first visitors to the state-of-the-art facility. The world-class centre has transformed what used to be a disused underground Victorian reservoir into a 59-seater Planetarium, showing a journey through space with immersive shows. The original features of the reservoir such as the intricate brick arches have been kept, preserving the history of the building. It also includes an exhibition hall, classrooms, and conference rooms. The planetarium is open for events, and education and pre-booked visits.

Sherwood Pines Loop from Kirkby in Ashfield cycle trail

Silverhill Wood is a historically important place found on the former sites of the Silverhill and Teversal collieries, offering a mixture of rich broadleaf and conifer trees, open meadows, and ponds. The site has a network of surfaced woodland trails, managed by Forestry England, with off road links to the Teversal Trail Network and further on into Derbyshire and the Five Pits Trail. The bronze sculpture is located at one of the highest points in Nottinghamshire where visitors can view former mining villages, and on a bright day marvel at Lincoln Cathedral in the distance. Birdlife in the wood includes buzzards, kestrels, skylarks, and green woodpeckers, and in the summer months look out for orchid plants and visitors may even come across a grass snake. The route The Skegby Heritage Walking Trail is a short trail that features many historic locations in Skegby. The Skegby Heritage Trail is on a former railway track used by cyclists as an off-road track and a nature trail by walkers. Places to visit Skegby Manor House and The Quaker House, St Andrews Church, Skegby Pinfold, Skegby Hall and Gardens, and the 16th century Kruck Cottage all appear on the trail. Stainsby Mill

Stanton Hill is a village in Ashfield found close to <a href="/places-to-visit/teversal-village">Teversal</a> and <a href="/places-to-visit/skegby-village">Skegby</a> villages, as well as neighbouring <a href="/places-to-visit/brierley-forest-park">Brierley Forest Park</a>. Stanton Hill village

Thousands of people visit St Mary Magdalene Church every year to pay homage to the burial place of poet Lord Byron and for its beautiful stained-glass windows. Overlooking Hucknall market, this working church at the heart of the community has the largest collection of stained-glass windows by revered Victorian artist Charles Eamer Kempe, as well as stunning carvings and wall mosaics. It also holds an annual Christmas Tree Festival with a number of trees on display decorated by schools and community groups.

Adjacent to the church is a statue of Byron located high above street level in the wall of the old Co-op building, and within the churchyard there is a memorial garden dedicated to the writer. Another famous figure, Victorian prize fighter Ben Caunt, is also buried at the church. It is believed he provided the nickname of Big Ben for the Palace of Westminster bell that is part of the London tourist attraction. The history A church has stood on this site from Saxon times, with foundations found under the nave in the 1930s. This parish church has traditional worship, but is also a place for the community to come together for groups and activities including crafts, exercise, and a venue to meet and chat. The church hall is available for hire with the chance to book catering facilities. The church has eight bells in its tower and members can teach bell-ringing. 
<h2>The history</h2>
The church survived a lightning strike in the eighteenth century, after which the spire and tower were rebuilt in 1866. There was also a fire at the building in 1907. Money was raised by the parish to rebuild the church, and a new porch was added as well as a carved wooden screen put in place of a chancel arch. The community has always been generous in providing gifts over the years. In 1928, the church's carved oak panels were donated in memory of Miss Hodgkinson and the chapel and its furnishings, consecrated in 1962 and dedicated to St Hilda, was donated by an anonymous parishioner.

The market town of Sutton in Ashfield is a fantastic place for shopping, leisure, parks, and heritage sites. Head to <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.idlewells.co.uk/" target="_blank" title="Idlewells Shopping Centre">Idlewells Shopping Centre</a> for a fun day out where you can visit the popular <a href="/places-to-visit/idlewells-indoor-market-and-shopping-centre">Idlewells Indoor Market</a>. Ton of the word Sutton is a Saxon suffix meaning 'an enclosure or fenced in clearing'. There were many churches in the area that still exist from as early as the 12th century including the Church of St Mary Magdalene, which still has building parts that date from that period. Sutton in Ashfield had a thriving industry in coal mining, and was also known for the hosiery brand of Pretty Polly. Portland Square, in Sutton in Ashfield, is a contemporary public space that is the centrepiece of ambitious development plans across the area. This part of town was once the site of the old village green, and had many names including Lower Green and Swine Green. It was also previously known as Engine Green, as there was a building there that housed a fire engine. The old engine house was demolished in September 1844, and this location is now called Portland Square, dedicated to the Duke of Portland. The Testing for Gas monument is a commemorative bronze statue found at the summit of a trail route at <a href="/places-to-visit/silverhill-wood">Silverhill Wood</a>. The famous memorial sculpture is of a Nottinghamshire miner, known locally as Dave, and includes a list on its base of the major collieries in the county that existed from 1819 until the early 2000s. The statue is located at one of the highest points in Nottinghamshire offering fantastic panoramic views across five counties. Plenty of information on the Teversal Trails routes is available at this centre. Many are dog-friendly trails, and there are also wheelchair-friendly routes. Located on former railway lines on the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire border, the routes start at the Teversal Trails Visitors Centre that has facilities including free car parking, a café, picnic space, and toilets. The trails include a circular route along the old railway lines that guides visitors to a former colliery site, takes in the abundant wildlife of Coppy Wood, and the historic Skegby village. Take a trip to the Coal Garden at the visitors centre that has artifacts from the local colliery, including pit wheels. Much of the trails network has now been designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) with tor grass, yellow oat grass, field scabious, hawkweed, and quaking grass, and is one of the few remaining areas in Nottinghamshire with limestone grassland. Teversal Trails Visitors Centre

It's famously known for the Grade II listed, 17th century country house of Teversal Manor, which is the fictional setting for Wragby Hall in D.H. Lawrence’s novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover and is also the former home of the Molyneux and Carnarvon families. Where to go The village is a designated conservation area due to its architectural and historic importance and has several listed buildings, primarily constructed from local stone and traditional roofing materials. The Grade I listed St. Katherine’s Church is a great place to start that still possesses box pews along with a wealth of fascinating antiquities. The Grade II listed Teversal Manor Room, located next to Teversal Manor, can be booked for events and also offers yoga sessions, a breakfast club, art group, and heritage group. Literature fans can visit The Carnarvon – formerly the Cross Keys – which was a local pub that author D.H. Lawrence was known to frequent. Apart from its literary connection, the Manor’s most notable residents were the Earls of Carnarvon, including the fifth Earl who financed the ill-fated excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt in 1922. Silverhill Wood Visit the ex-colliery spoil heap at the edge of Teversal that is the highest point in Nottinghamshire and at its summit enjoy the truly stunning bronze sculpture depicting a local miner, known by many as Dave. The route The Three Villages Walking Trail is a circular route that runs through the villages of <a href="/places-to-visit/selston-village">Selston</a>, <a href="/places-to-visit/westwood-village">Westwood</a>, and <a href="/places-to-visit/bagthorpe-village">Bagthorpe</a>, giving hikers the opportunity to discover beautiful countryside scenery. The Three Villages Walking Trail

Titchfield Park is an award-winning Green Flag park that is a 10-minute walk from Hucknall town centre and is a place that has something for everyone. The 24-acre park is filled with sports facilities including a multi-use games area, a skate park, floodlit five-a-side synthetic football pitch, and a bowling green – which is home to <a href="/places-to-visit/hucknall-titchfield-park-bowls-club">Titchfield Park Bowls Club</a>. Families can head to the children’s play area and enjoy <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041824165389&amp;ref=py_c" target="_blank" title="Titchfield Park Café" data-anchor="?id=100041824165389&amp;ref=py_c">Titchfield Park Café</a>, and visitors can also wander through the green space’s wildflower meadow and its bee garden. The park also contains two listed structures: a war memorial and the Zachariah Green monument, and has an original shelter designed by Hucknall-born architect Thomas Cecil Howitt, known as the Boathouse. <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.parkrun.org.uk/hucknall-juniors/" target="_blank">Take part in the free Hucknall junior 2k Parkrun based at Titchfield Park every Sunday at 9am</a> The history Titchfield Park was created when the Duke of Portland gave 11 acres of land, then known as Caddow Park, to the town of Hucknall in 1914. This was to honour the 21st birthday of his son, the Marquis of Titchfield. A further 13 acres were added when the Hucknall Miners Welfare Committee decided to further the development of Titchfield Park from funds raised to provide facilities for the local miners. The original brief of the committee was the park should be set out to provide for cricket, football, bowls, and tennis courts with trees, shrubs, and flowers planted all around. The design, drawn up by J.W. Bardill, also included a bandstand, tearooms, a pavilion building, shelters, and caretaker's lodge. The works were held up by the outbreak of the First World War and the Marquis finally performed the opening ceremony in July 1922.

Titchfield Park

Underwood is a former coal mining village in Ashfield close to <a href="/places-to-visit/bagthorpe-village">Bagthorpe</a>, <a href="/places-to-visit/westwood-village">Westwood</a>, and <a href="/places-to-visit/selston-village">Selston</a> villages. This hilltop village is included in the beautiful countryside of the <a href="https://discoverashfield.co.uk/places-to-visit/hidden-valleys/" title="Hidden Valleys">Hidden Valleys</a> area, which has miles of waymarked rural walks, cycle paths, and bridleways. One of the most popular attractions to visit in Underwood is the peaceful 2.5 acre garden of <a href="/places-to-visit/felley-priory">Felley Priory</a>, where visitors can enjoy the gorgeous countryside views and discover the plant nursery. Head to The Farmhouse Tea Room at Felley Priory that offers a selection of light lunches, snacks, and drinks with gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan food. Underwood is a great place for a walk or cycle where visitors can admire the pretty countryside scenery, and stop off for a drink or food at one of its lovely country pubs. Underwood is also home to the <a rel="noopener" href="http://www.umwcc.co.uk/" target="_blank">Underwood Miners Welfare Cricket Club</a>, in Church Lane, which was created in 1894. Underwood village

The current church building was completed in 1906 and built in the Gothic free style. In addition to regular worship at the United Reformed Church, there is a high level of community use and this was an important aspect that greatly helped in obtaining funding to put the new roof in place in 2019. The history The architects, Messrs. G. Baines and Son, of London, and the builder, Mr J. Greenwood, of Mansfield, created the Victorian church where the brickwork is perfectly parallel and a national example of good practice. Contained within the church are some unique features such as an organ in its original unaltered condition, and curved pews that form ripples from the pulpit. The seating is made of pitch pine, while the pulpit and communion rails are English oak. A mallet and trowel, the former made out of oak from the old church in King Street, were presented to Mr Alliott at the foundation stone laying, and a solid silver key to Mrs Alliott at the opening. A fascinating fact is £200 was donated for a new organ costing £400 by American millionaire and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, installed on November 13, 1906. United Reformed Church

Westwood is a small village found very close to <a href="/places-to-visit/jacksdale-village">Jacksdale village</a> and surrounded by stunning countryside. The area has many green spaces and is a wonderful place to walk or cycle through, offering a country pub along the way for food and drinks. Westwood is part of the <a href="/places-to-visit/hidden-valleys">Hidden Valleys</a> area of Ashfield, which has rural walks, cycle paths, and bridleways. Services, including a post office and shops, are found in nearby Jacksdale. The Grade II listed building of St. Mary's Church, located in Jacksdale, dates back to the 12th century and also covers the area of Westwood. How to get there By car: Exit at junction 27 of the M1 and take the A608 exit to Mansfield. Continue on A608 and take Main Road to Rutland Road in Westwood. Westwood village

Ault Hucknall village is a fascinating destination in Derbyshire that is known as the smallest village in England - although many would argue that it is a hamlet. The village has a few houses and St John the Baptist Church, where English philosopher Thomas Hobbes is buried. Ault Hucknall is close to the National Trust's Hardwick Hall and just across the border from Ashfield. How to get there By car: Exit at junction 29 of the M1 and take the A617 exit to Chesterfield. Take Mill Lane to Hodmire Lane. Ault Hucknall village

Bestwood is a civil parish in Nottinghamshire with a village of the same name found close to Hucknall. It is located in picturesque countryside, where there are several excellent walking and cycling trails, and is part of the region's <a href="/places-to-visit/hidden-valleys">Hidden Valleys</a> area. Many of those are found at the family-friendly Bestwood Country Park that has grassland and woodland areas with plenty of wildlife. <a href="/places-to-visit/mill-lakes">Mill Lakes</a> at the park is a stunning place to visit, where visitors can go fishing or hire a boat to take out on the water. The area also has the <a rel="noopener" href="http://www.fbcp.org.uk/winding-engine-house.html" target="_blank">Bestwood Winding Engine House</a>, which was once part of Bestwood Colliery, and is a museum where the public can discover its history and encounter the winding engine. Burntstump Country Park is a gorgeous woodland area in Nottinghamshire that is perfect for a countryside stroll. The destination is popular with dog walkers and families, has a cricket pitch, is found close to the Burnt Stump pub, and is an ideal spot for a picnic. How to get there By car: Exit at junction 27 of the M1 and take the A608 exit to Heanor/Hucknall. Continue on Mansfield Rd/A608. Take the A611 and B6011 to Burntstump Hill. Burntstump Country Park

Codnor Castle's ancient ruins in Derbyshire date back to the 13th century when it was created by Norman knight William Peverel. The stone keep and bailey fortress is a Scheduled Ancient Monument overlooking the Erewash Valley. The castle site has public footpaths that lead up to it, with an information board about its history. This historical site is close to <a href="/places-to-visit/jacksdale-village">Jacksdale village</a> in Ashfield. Codnor Park Reservoir walking trail

Cromford Canal today is a place to have a leisurely wander and admire the water wildlife, but it is also a site famous for its links to the industrial heritage of both Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The 14.5 mile canal was constructed in 1794 by civil engineers William Jessop and Benjamin Outram, and was most recently a working waterway in 1944. It ran through Derbyshire from Cromford to the Erewash Canal and had a branch to Pinxton - a village which shares a border with Nottinghamshire. The Pinxton Branch was a vital route to transport coal through the counties. Part of the Cromford Canal is close to <a href="/places-to-visit/jacksdale-village">Jacksdale village</a> in Ashfield. Eastwood is a village close to Ashfield that is famous for being the birthplace of Nottinghamshire author D.H. Lawrence. A museum dedicated to his life is found at 8a Victoria Street, which was the writer’s first home, and has today been transformed into a museum and gift shop. Eastwood

<a rel="noopener" href="https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/countryside/countryside-sites/country-parks-and-visitor-centres/grassmoor-country-park.aspx" target="_blank">Grassmoor Country Park</a> is in Derbyshire and has lush meadows that are ideal for walking, cycling, horse riding, and having a picnic. Found at the northern end of the famous Five Pits Trail, this park is a wildlife haven filled with butterflies, water voles, skylarks, meadow pipits, and grass snakes. Fishing is allowed at the large pond in the country park all year round. Grassmoor Country Park

These include Christ Church, The Poplars vicarage, Ironville House, and the Jessop Monument that was created to remember civil engineer William Jessop. Ironville is the direct neighbour of Jacksdale village in Ashfield and is a wonderful place for a walk or cycle along the historic canal. Ashfield District Council will celebrate the annual event of Commonwealth Day with a flag raising ceremony, with the theme for the service this year as One Resilient Common Future.&nbsp; Commonwealth Day is held annually on 11 March, and marks the start of a week-long series of events and activities around the globe.&nbsp; Chairman of the council, Councillor Dale Grounds, will host the ceremony outside the council offices in Kirkby in Ashfield.
