In winter, you can often hear the woodpecker before seeing it. This cheerful bird drums on trees to establish its habitat, as woodpeckers don’t have a song to advertise themselves. They have strong bones in their skulls and small air pockets that prevent them from getting a headache from all the hammering. Woodpeckers dine mostly on insects, but will also eat acorns, nuts, fruit, sap, berries, and pine seeds. In autumn, they may add woodland berries to their diets. They are most likely to be heard between January and April. <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/qayfma44/kings-mill-reservoir-duck.jpg?width=500&amp;height=375&amp;mode=max" alt="" width="500" height="375"> There are a variety of diving ducks at Mill Waters who survive by diving into shallow water to scoop up plants and insects. Ducks have waterproof feathers that means even when they dive deep beneath the water, the feathers closest to their skin stay completely dry. The sociable pochard duck can often be seen mixing in large flocks of diving ducks in the winter. Strangely these birds are silent apart from when they are courting – the male will whistle and the female ‘squack’. It is listed as a vulnerable species due to its declining population. In winter and spring, male pochards have a bright reddish-brown head, a black breast and tail, and a pale grey body. Females are brown with a greyish body and pale cheeks. After the breeding season the ducks grow new feathers, and for about a month they can’t fly. During this so called ‘eclipse season’, the males become more camouflaged like the females so they don't draw the attention of predators. By October, they have their original colour of feathers back.
<img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/5qynnddu/migrant-hawker-dragonfly.jpg?width=501&amp;height=376&amp;mode=max" alt="Migrant hawker dragonfly" width="501" height="376">Autumn brings dragonflies and damselflies that are invertebrates that hover above the water in the reedbed in search of prey, including bloodworms, snails, water fleas, tadpoles, and the larvae of mosquitoes or other aquatic insects. Their large eyes are made up of thousands of six-sided units and they can detect the slightest movement with their excellent vision. Dragonflies are not actually a fly, even though they both have six legs and three body parts including a head, thorax, and abdomen. The main difference is that flies only have two wings, whereas dragonflies have four wings. Dragonflies are different from damselflies as their wings are outstretched at rest. Look out for the migrant hawker dragonfly and the common blue damselfly between July and October.Migrant hawker dragonfly
Funghi is a type of organism that is commonly referred to as mushrooms and toadstools. They are different from plants as they do not pollinate and feed off decomposing matter. Some funghi can be poisonous or fatal if eaten, so please do not touch any of the funghi around Mill Waters. Look out for these two species around the Mill Waters site. Fly agaric is famous for its bright red cap; it can grow to 20cm across and 30cm high. It is inedible because of its psychoactive and hallucinogenic properties. It featured in the story Alice in Wonderland and was used on Victorian and Edwardian Christmas cards as a symbol of good luck. Look out for fly agaric from late summer to early winter. Common bonnet (Mycena) is a mushroom that looks like a small, brown hat, and its name comes from the hats worn by the ancient Greek Mycenae. It has flat or upturned edges and distractive toothed gills. Its colour varies and it is known as the ‘rosy gill fairy helmet’. It can be found growing in clusters on rotted wood and tree stumps. The cap grows up to 5cm across and 8cm high. It can be found year-round, but is more likely to be seen in summer and autumn. It is not suitable to eat. In spring, there is the common merganser, which is a diving duck named because of their long-serrated bills for catching slippery fish. Male birds are white, with dark green heads, black backs, and long, red, hooked bills. Females are grey, with a gingery or reddish-brown head and a white throat. The mute swan has an all-white body and a reddish-orange bill that has a black tip at the base. Visitors can admire them gliding serenely across the reservoir, dipping their long necks in the water to feed on the vegetation and molluscs beneath. Don’t get too close, as the males in particular can be aggressive if they feel threatened. Please don’t feed bread to the swans. Most of the year they have sufficient food from the reservoir. An exception may be made during the winter months when vegetation may be scarce – they may then appreciate lettuce, spinach, cooked cabbage, cracked corn, whole oats, cooked rice, and steamed vegetable peelings. <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/fgin3unx/common-frog.jpg?width=500&amp;height=376&amp;mode=max" alt="Common frog" width="500" height="376">The summer months are when visitors will come across frogs and toads living in and around small ponds at the Mill Waters site. You can tell them apart as toads have a browner, warty skin compared to the olive green frog. The female frog may be more reddish in colour. Frogs also tend to hop around, as opposed to the toad which prefers to crawl. Look out for frog and toad spawn in pools around the heritage site from late spring. Frogspawn lies in clumps beneath the surface, whereas toadspawn is in a long chain wound around greenery. Toadlets can emerge from ponds in huge numbers during early summer, usually after rain. Summer is also the time for wildflowers to thrive that not only brighten up the landscape, but also serve a vital function to provide pollen for bees and nutrients for butterflies and many other insects to survive. Through our management plan we have planted a variety of wildflowers around the site to help make the area more attractive to a range of wildlife. Notable species include lady’s bedstraw, which has a delicate honey-scented yellow flower. Its name harks back to medieval times when dried grasses would be used to stuff mattresses. The common yarrow attracts butterflies with its soft, feathery leaves and pungent scent. It was traditionally used to treat wounds and for other medicinal purposes. Cornflower is a pretty, bright blue flower that appears on long stalks during the summer. Look out for the bees and butterflies feeding off its nectar. BIRDS AT MILL WATERS Birdwatching is a popular pastime and there are many birds to look out for when visiting Mill Waters.  <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/f0jbyy30/a-dread-of-terns.jpg?width=500&amp;height=375&amp;mode=max" alt="Dread of terns" width="500" height="375"> The common tern has a slender body, a smooth, rounded head, and long, pointed wings. Its breeding plumage is light silvery-grey in its upperparts, and clear black outer primaries on its wing tips. Outside the breeding season, the bird keeps some of its distinguishable black cap, but its forehead and face turn white. Its legs and bill turn black, losing their orange-red colour. Admire this bird’s graceful flight, as it hovers over the reservoir before plunging down for its prey. It will also swim as it picks up food from the surface of the water or just below it. With its long legs and neck, the grey heron can be easily sighted all year round at Hermitage Ponds. Typically, they stand with their neck stretched out looking for food, or hunched down with their neck bent over their chest. Herons nest up high on the trees in an area that is known as their heronry. The heron’s diet consists of fish, as well as small birds and mammals such as voles and amphibians. <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/snujmgh1/chiffchaff-bird.jpg?width=500&amp;height=375&amp;mode=max" alt="Chiffchaff bird" width="500" height="375"> The chiffchaff is a very active bird, constantly flicking its tails and wings while feeding. Chiffchaffs feed on small insects, including caterpillars, gnats, and midges, which are foraged from high in the canopy. They also catch flies in mid-air and hover to pick insects from under leaves. Chiffchaffs begin to arrive in March and depart in October. They are similar to the brightly-coloured willow warbler bird, but have a different song that are a run of notes that sound like ‘chiffchaff, chiffchaff’ repeated many times. Learning about the natural world and birdwatching is a great hobby for children who love learning to identify different birdsong and plumage. Check out this guide to common birdsong by the <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2019/04/identify-bird-song/" target="_blank" title="Woodland Trust">Woodland Trust</a> that features many birds that live or spend time at Mill Waters throughout the year. Nature conservation Ashfield District Council has developed a management plan for Mill Waters, which aims to conserve the existing wildlife and enable it to flourish. A key aspect of the plan is to improve the natural corridor around the site for small mammals, by cutting back vegetation around the ditches to allow other plants to flourish. This will encourage the water voles and amphibians, including toads and frogs, to spread across the site. <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/xr4gv2mn/water-vole.jpg?width=500&amp;height=375&amp;mode=max" alt="Water vole" width="500" height="375"> Water voles have a short, rounded body, blunt muzzle, and small ears that are often almost entirely hidden in their thick fur. Their furry tails are about two-thirds of their body length. They are shy creatures and sightings are rare as their burrows are not easy to detect. The burrows are often located along the water’s edge, with some just above or at the water level on steep banks. You can tell that a water vole is in the area because they are keen gardeners, nibbling down on the grass outside their burrows. They also have a latrine, a dedicated toilet area, outside their living quarters. Droppings are about 1.2cm long and greenish in colour, as opposed to rat droppings that are much bigger and a brown or black colour. Water voles are a protected species as their population has declined due to loss of habitats and pollution. It is crucial visitors do not disturb the habitats of the water voles, as it could be detrimental to their survival. Water safety The Mill Adventure Base and clubs at Mill Waters follow strict procedures and risk assessments to allow them to use the water for their activities. The public are not allowed to enter the water or launch their own craft onto the water for leisure or sporting activities. If there are any water quality issues identified, signs will be erected to warn the public that people or their animals must not enter the water. The tranquil garden at Felley Priory, where visitors can discover many rare and unusual plants, is one of Nottinghamshire’s best kept secrets. The 2.5 acre garden has been carefully planned so there are plants to see all year round. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful, rolling countryside and the stunning exterior of the venue’s 16th century house. Felley Priory has a fully-stocked nursery, where visitors can purchase plants they have seen in the garden. The Farmhouse Tea Room offers a selection of light lunches, snacks, and drinks with gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan food, and can be hired for private events. The house is not open to the public and dogs are not allowed at the venue, except guide dogs. Sutton Lawn

The romantic ruins of this historic church and churchyard, registered as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, offer an idyllic location overlooking <a href="/stories/annesley-parkland/" title="Annesley Hall and Park">Annesley Hall and Park</a>. The Grade I listed church, dating back to the 12th century, is a haven for plants such as the purple orchid and coral fungus, and wildlife including several bat species, green woodpeckers, and barn owls. The tranquil Grade II* listed park is nestled in the midst of Annesley Forest, where you can find the site of a former motte-and-bailey castle. Enjoy the extensive rural views across Annesley Park, with its many varieties of wildflowers and birdlife.  <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/wyspnp3s/annesley-hall.jpg?width=501&amp;height=376&amp;mode=max" alt="Annesley Hall on a bright sunny day" width="501" height="376">Annesley Hall The history of the area Members of the Chaworth Musters family, who lived at Annesley Hall, are buried inside the church and adjoining graveyard. Nottinghamshire author D.H. Lawrence also mentioned the church in his first novel The White Peacock (1911). <a href="/stories/lord-byron/" title="Lord Byron">Lord Byron</a> was a regular visitor at the hall and church, and views of Annesley Park can be seen from nearby Diadem Hill – the assumed location of Byron’s poem, The Dream. Annesley is described by Byron as: “Where my thoughtless childhood stray’d…” and was an inspiration for much of his work. The church overlooks the Grade II listed Annesley Hall, which together with its connections to the Chaworth Musters and Byron families, was also linked to the Spencer and Churchill families. The Annesley Old Church Project The ruins of the church were restored through a three-year Heritage Lottery-funded project secured by Ashfield District Council with funding totalling £450,000 in 2011. Apart from the preservation of the site, the project also promoted community events and activities through the help of local residents and the Friends of Annesley Old Church. Creative writing workshops and arts events were held, as well as the Annesley Heritage Walks and research into the church history and surrounding district. Audio listening posts and information boards were also installed, so visitors can learn about the history of the church.  Opening times: The church and churchyard are open throughout the year. Annesley Old Church

Bagthorpe is a small village in Ashfield close to Underwood, Westwood, and <a href="/places-to-visit/jacksdale-village/" title="Jacksdale">Jacksdale</a> villages. This Nottinghamshire village is included in the <a href="/places-to-visit/hidden-valleys/" title="Hidden Valleys">Hidden Valleys</a> area that is gorgeous countryside north of <a href="/places-to-visit/hucknall-town-centre/">Hucknall</a>, which has miles of waymarked rural walks, cycle paths, and bridleways. Bagthorpe has beautiful scenery and is a great stop for a drink at one of its country pubs.  How to get there By car: Exit at junction 27 of the M1 and take the A608 exit to Mansfield. Bagthorpe village

Brierley Forest Park is a haven for wildlife offering nature walks covering over two miles, as well as cycling trails and a route for horse riders. The Green Flag park covers 78 hectares through woodlands, hay meadows, streams, and wetland areas. It has a wide variety of facilities, including a lake with fishing platforms, mountain bike track, children’s play area, picnic area, and sculpture trail. Take a stroll around the park’s arboretum and its remembrance grove, and head to Brierley Café and Visitor Centre for refreshments and a chance to learn about the park’s former colliery history. Visitors can also discover wildlife and birdlife including foxes, owls, meadow pipits, lapwings, and a large population of skylarks that nest on the former spoil tip. There are several reminders of the site’s coal mining past, through the timber miner sculptures outside the visitor centre, the commemorative stone on Rooley Tops, and the pit wheels along the main path to Brierley Waters. Within the visitor centre, there are displays illustrating the site’s history.

Found close to Kirkby in Ashfield’s town centre, Kingsway Park offers excellent sports and recreational facilities for residents and sports teams. The Green Flag park covers 9 hectares with football pitches, floodlit synthetic pitches, a multi-use games area and tennis courts. Prior to this the site was grazing land for horses and locally known as 16 Acre Field. The street The Acre at the southern end of the park takes its name from this and the park is often referred to locally as ‘The Acre’. The park’s heritage features are the stone archways at the entrances on Hodgkinson Road and Kingsway. Poplar trees were an important feature that lined the drive from the main entrance on the east side of the park, the western perimeter with the London, Midland and Scottish (LMS) Railway line, and to the north as far as the Hodgkinson Road entrance. Kirkby translates in Danish to church town, and the area was mentioned in the Domesday Book for its two churches of St Wilfrid's Church and St Thomas' Church that both still exist today. The town expanded in the Victorian era due to its many collieries and had an extensive offering of railway lines that transported coal across the country.

Linby is a small village in Nottinghamshire found just outside of Hucknall. It is included in the Hidden Valleys area that is beautiful countryside north of Hucknall with miles of waymarked rural walks, cycle paths, and bridleways. Linby village

Lindley’s Mill is a hidden gem found near the centre of Sutton in Ashfield and one of only two stone windmills in Nottinghamshire, with the second at Warsop. The mill has a fascinating history and is a Grade II listed building created in the 1820s by farmer, miller, and baker James Lindley. <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/niga2oh5/lindley-s-mill-landscape.jpg?width=500&amp;height=375.04099704821255" alt="" width="500" height="375.04099704821255">Lindley's Mill in Sutton in Ashfield The history and restoration Built to replace a post mill damaged by a gale in 1818, the mill fell into disuse in the early 1900s. Prior to that it provided flour for bread and animal feed for livestock. All that remains is the stone tower that was restored in 2014 from Heritage Lottery funding that was used for new windows and a roof, and a small heritage centre. A wooden floor was also fitted in 2015, partially funded by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (Mills Section). In September 2023, the flat roof of the building was replaced for a conical roof to help prevent water damage and the floor inside the mill was replaced.  Booking Sutton Heritage Society run open days for public visits. Lindley's Mill

The route Take a wander around the magnificent countryside around the Annesley Park estate, which was once the ancestral home of the Chaworth-Musters family. This area inspired two of the county's most famous authors, Romantic poet Lord Byron and novelist DH Lawrence. Literary Landscape walking trail

Mill Lakes located in Bestwood Village is an area with beautiful countryside and plenty of wildlife. It is part of Bestwood Country Park and covers 150 acres with the water for the lakes running from the River Leen. The area is popular with walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers and dog walkers, and the scenic 2.5 mile circular trail around the lakes is highly recommended for its views. Nature Walk trail

Newstead Abbey is known as the ancestral home of Romantic poet Lord Byron and has a fascinating historic house, gorgeous gardens, and 300 acres of parkland to explore. Found in the Nottinghamshire village of Ravenshead, Sir John Byron was given permission in 1540 by King Henry VIII to convert the former Augustinian priory into a country house. Generations later it was passed on to the sixth Baron Byron who is more famously known as the poet Lord Byron. <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/mnrhz0ma/newstead-abbey.jpg?width=500&amp;height=376&amp;mode=max" alt="" width="500" height="376">Newstead Abbey Newstead Abbey has Historic House Tours and regular seasonal events including summer open air theatre. Pleasley and the Five Pits cycle trail

Pleasley Pit Country Park is a reclaimed colliery site that provides a fantastic day out for people that love nature and history. The attraction is a Local Nature Reserve that has swans, dragonflies, and damselflies at the site's ponds. There are also plenty of wading birds, warblers, the occasional grass snake, and sheep. Visitors will also love the wildflowers in spring and the woodlands at this beautiful countryside location.  The mining history of Pleasley Pit is a fascinating one to learn about through the site's Coal Mining Museum that has a restored winding engine house and colliery buildings. Visitors can discover tools and equipment used by miners, see photographs, and learn about the stories of the workers and their families. Pleasley Walk trail

Located on the edge of Kirkby in Ashfield, this tranquil park is ideal for taking a walk along the historic woodland paths and discovering an abundance of wildlife. Venture to the park’s ponds to spot a kingfisher and discover other birdlife habitats, or take a leisurely stroll through the woodland areas some of which are said to date back to 1600. This green space has many rare plant species, creating an area filled with fascinating natural history. The Green Flag Award winning park has pretty wildflower meadows that produce a stunning array of blooms in the spring months. The site is based on a band of magnesium limestone that enables many rare plant species to grow, making it a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Portland Park

Rookery Park is a beautiful, dog-friendly green space in Huthwaite with woodland, wetland and grassland. In the 1800s, the park was the site of New Hucknall Colliery and today has surfaced pathways ideal for walkers and runners. Visitors can follow the paths from one end of the park to the other and head up to the summit of the former pit tip that provides stunning views as far as Crich Stand in Derbyshire. The park can be accessed on Mill Lane, Common Road, Rookery Lane and Columbia Avenue. Sherwood Observatory is home to the Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society (MSAS) and its famous white dome houses a 24-inch hand-built Newtonian Reflecting Telescope. The observatory was opened to the public in 1986. Sherwood Pines Loop from Kirkby in Ashfield cycle trail

Silverhill Wood is a historically important place found on the former sites of the Silverhill and Teversal collieries, offering a mixture of rich broadleaf and conifer trees, open meadows and ponds. The site has a network of surfaced woodland trails, managed by Forestry England, with off road links to the Teversal Trail Network and further on into Derbyshire and the Five Pits Trail. The wood is ideal for hikers, cyclists, horse riders, and those who want to stop off and have a bite to eat at one of the picnic benches near the ponds. <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/bt1p4rpo/silverhill-wood-miner-statue.jpg?width=371&amp;height=495&amp;mode=max" alt="Silverhill Wood bronze statue of Nottinghamshire miner" width="371" height="495"> Visitors can explore the trails on foot or bike before making their way to the summit to be rewarded with the area’s famous memorial statue of a Nottinghamshire miner known locally as Dave. The bronze sculpture is located at one of the highest points in Nottinghamshire where visitors can view former mining villages, and on a bright day marvel at Lincoln Cathedral in the distance. Birdlife in the wood includes buzzards, kestrels, skylarks, and green woodpeckers, and in the summer months look out for orchid plants and you may even come across a grass snake. Silverhill Wood

Skegby is a beautiful village with many sites of historic interest found about a mile away from Sutton in Ashfield. Two places of note are the ruins of Skegby Manor House on Mansfield Road and The Quaker House, both of which were homes to Elizabeth Hooton who was one of the leading figures in the Quaker movement. The buildings both feature on the Skegby Heritage Trail that includes places of historic interest around the village, such as St Andrews Church, Skegby Pinfold, Skegby Hall and Gardens, and the 16th century Kruck Cottage. The Skegby Trail is on a former railway track used by cyclists as an off-road track and a nature trail by walkers. It can be accessed from Buttery Lane, in Skegby, and ends at Chesterfield Road, in Pleasley. Skegby Hall is a Grade II listed building that was created around 1720. It is found on the Skegby Heritage Trail that includes places of historic interest around the village of <a href="/places-to-visit/skegby-village">Skegby</a>. Stainsby Mill

Thousands of people visit St Mary Magdalene Church every year to pay homage to the burial place of poet Lord Byron and for its beautiful stained-glass windows. Overlooking Hucknall market, this working church at the heart of the community has the largest collection of stained-glass windows by revered Victorian artist Charles Eamer Kempe, as well as stunning carvings and wall mosaics. It also holds an annual Christmas Tree Festival with a number of trees on display decorated by schools and community groups. The Byron family vault includes the poet and his daughter Ada Lovelace, known as the world’s first computer programmer. Adjacent to the church is a statue of Byron located high above street level in the wall of the old Co-op building, and within the churchyard there is a memorial garden dedicated to the writer. Another famous figure, Victorian prize fighter Ben Caunt, is also buried at the church. There were many churches in the area that still exist from as early as the 12th century including the Church of St Mary Magdalene, which still has building parts that date from that period. Sutton Outdoor Market

The Testing for Gas monument is a commemorative bronze statue found at the summit of a trail route at <a href="/places-to-visit/silverhill-wood">Silverhill Wood</a>. The famous memorial sculpture is of a Nottinghamshire miner, known locally as Dave, and includes a list on its base of the major collieries in the county that existed from 1819 until the early 2000s. The statue is located at one of the highest points in Nottinghamshire offering fantastic panoramic views across five counties. Teversal Station Loop from Skegby cycle trail

The Teversal Trails Visitors Centre is the best location for visitors who want to find out about walking, cycling, and horse-riding trails in the Nottinghamshire countryside. Plenty of information on the Teversal Trails routes are available at this centre. Many are dog-friendly trails, with parts that are wheelchair-friendly due to the flat surface. Located on former railway lines on the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire border, the routes starts at the Teversal Trails Visitors Centre that offers free car parking, a café, picnic space, and toilets. <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/gqypzluo/teversal-trails-2.jpg?width=375&amp;height=500" alt="" width="375" height="500"> Much of the trails network has now been designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) with tor grass, yellow oat grass, field scabious, hawkweed, and quaking grass, and is one of the few remaining areas in Nottinghamshire with limestone grassland. This circular route along the old railway lines takes visitors to a former colliery site, takes in the abundant wildlife of Coppy Wood, and the historic Skegby village. Teversal Trails Visitors Centre

This unspoilt country village is small in size, but well worth a visit as it's brimming with history and heritage. It's famously known for the Grade II listed, 17th century country house of Teversal Manor, which is the fictional setting for Wragby Hall in D.H. Lawrence’s novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover and is also the former home of the Molyneux and Carnarvon families. <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/wj2fhcvu/teversal-countryside.jpg?width=500&amp;height=375.0850918992512" alt="" width="500" height="375.0850918992512"> Where to go The village is a designated conservation area due to its architectural and historic importance and has several listed buildings, primarily constructed from local stone and traditional roofing materials. The Grade I listed St. Katherine’s Church is a great place to start that still possesses box pews along with a wealth of fascinating antiquities. The Grade II listed Teversal Manor Room, located next to Teversal Manor, can be booked for events and also offers yoga sessions, a breakfast club, art group and heritage group. Literature fans can visit The Carnarvon – formerly the Cross Keys – which was a local pub that author D.H. Lawrence was known to frequent. Apart from its literary connection, the Manor’s most notable residents were the Earls of Carnarvon, including the fifth Earl who financed the ill-fated excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt in 1922.  <a href="/silverhill-wood/" title="Silverhill Wood">Silverhill Wood</a> Visit the ex-colliery spoil heap at the edge of Teversal that is the highest point in Nottinghamshire and at its summit enjoy the truly stunning bronze sculpture depicting a local miner, known by many as Dave. Teversal village

Titchfield Park is an award-winning Green Flag park that is a 10-minute walk from Hucknall town centre and is a place that has something for everyone. The 24-acre park is filled with sports facilities including a multi-use games area, a skate park, floodlit five-a-side synthetic football pitch, and a bowling green – which is home to <a rel="noopener" href="https://hucknallbowls.co.uk/" target="_blank" title="Titchfield Park Bowls Club">Titchfield Park Bowls Club</a>. Families can head to the children’s play area and enjoy <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041824165389&amp;ref=py_c" target="_blank" title="Titchfield Park Café" data-anchor="?id=100041824165389&amp;ref=py_c">Titchfield Park Café</a>, and visitors can also wander through the green space’s wildflower meadow and its bee garden. This was to honour the 21st birthday of his son, the Marquis of Titchfield. A further 13 acres were added when the Hucknall Miners Welfare Committee decided to further the development of Titchfield Park from funds raised to provide facilities for the local miners. The original brief of the committee was the park should be set out to provide for cricket, football, bowls and tennis courts with trees, shrubs and flowers planted all around. The design, drawn up by J.W. Bardill, also included a bandstand, tearooms, a pavilion building, shelters and caretaker's lodge. The works were held up by the outbreak of the First World War and the Marquis finally performed the opening ceremony in July 1922.

Titchfield Park

This Grade II-listed church was formerly a Congregational church and has had a worshipping community since 1651. The current church building was completed in 1906 and built in the Gothic free style. In addition to regular worship at the United Reformed Church, there is a high level of community use and this was an important aspect that greatly helped in obtaining funding to put the new roof in place in 2019.  <img src="https://media.umbraco.io/dev-discover-ashfield-heartcore/pkjftkfb/united-reformed-church-sutton-in-ashfield.jpg?width=500&amp;height=375" alt="The organ at United Reformed Church in Sutton in Ashfield" width="500" height="375"> The history The architects, Messrs. G. Baines and Son, of London, and the builder, Mr J. Greenwood, of Mansfield, created the Victorian church where the brickwork is perfectly parallel and a national example of good practice. Contained within the church are some unique features such as an organ in its original unaltered condition, and curved pews that form ripples from the pulpit. The seating is made of pitch pine, while the pulpit and communion rails are English oak. A mallet and trowel, the former made out of oak from the old church in King Street, were presented to Mr Alliott at the foundation stone laying, and a solid silver key to Mrs Alliott at the opening. A fascinating fact is £200 was donated for a new organ costing £400 by American millionaire and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, installed on November 13, 1906. United Reformed Church

Ault Hucknall village is a fascinating destination in Derbyshire that is known as the smallest village in England - although many would argue that it is a hamlet. The village has a few houses and St John the Baptist Church, where English philosopher Thomas Hobbes is buried. Burntstump Country Park is a gorgeous woodland area in Nottinghamshire that is perfect for a countryside stroll. Burntstump Country Park

Codnor Castle's ancient ruins in Derbyshire date back to the 13th century when it was created by Norman knight William Peverel. The stone keep and bailey fortress is a Scheduled Ancient Monument overlooking the Erewash Valley. The castle site has public footpaths that lead up to it, with an information board about its history. Codnor Castle

Codnor Park Reservoir is an ideal spot for hiking, cycling, fishing, dog walking, and picnics. Located in Derbyshire, the reservoir is close to the Ashfield village of Jacksdale and offers Codnor Park that is filled with greenery and wildlife. Visitors will be enchanted by the birdlife in the water including ducks, swans, and geese. Codnor Park Reservoir walking trail

Cromford Canal today is a place to have a leisurely wander and admire the water wildlife, but it is also a site famous for its links to the industrial heritage of both Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The 14.5 mile canal was constructed in 1794 by civil engineers William Jessop and Benjamin Outram, and was most recently a working waterway in 1944. It ran through Derbyshire from Cromford to the Erewash Canal and had a branch to Pinxton - a village which shares a border with Nottinghamshire. The Pinxton Branch was a vital route to transport coal through the counties. Cromford Canal

Grassmoor Country Park in Derbyshire, has lush meadows that are ideal for walking, cycling, horse riding, and having a picnic. Found at the northern end of the famous Five Pits Trail, this park is a wildlife haven filled with butterflies, water voles, skylarks, meadow pipits, and grass snakes. Grassmoor Country Park

Ironville is a historic village in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire where the Cromford Canal runs through its centre. Built in 1830 by manufacturing firm, Butterley Company, to house its workers, the village has 11 Grade II listed buildings. These include Christ Church, The Poplars vicarage, Ironville House, and the Jessop Monument that was created to remember civil engineer William Jessop. Ironville village

The Jessop Monument is a 70-feet high structure created in honour of English civil engineer William Jessop, famous for his work on canals and early railways in the 18th and 19th centuries. He was chief engineer at the Cromford Canal Company and a partner in the Butterley Company, which he founded with fellow civil engineer Benjamin Outram. The monument created in 1854 has a viewing platform, not open to the public, that offers views of the Erewash Valley. Jessop Monument

Papplewick Pumping Station is a fascinating historic attraction designed in the 1880s that pumped fresh water to the residents of Nottingham. Millions of gallons were pumped every day at this Victorian water pumping station, which is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument offering a wonderful day out at its museum and landscaped grounds. The pumping station has many original features including an Engine House with twin beam engines and a Boiler House with six Lancashire Boilers. Sherwood Pines Forest Park is located near the village of Kings Clipstone in Nottinghamshire and has activities including mountain biking, walking trails, orienteering, bushcraft, and a children's adventure trail. Tibshelf is a Derbyshire village found just across the border from Nottinghamshire close to the villages of Teversal and Huthwaite in Ashfield. There is plenty to visit in this village including Tibshelf Ponds, an ex-colliery site, where visitors can go angling at the two fishing ponds. Tibshelf village

Vicar Water Country Park, near Clipstone village in Nottinghamshire, has amazing scenery with woodland, grassland, and heathland that all feature plenty of wildlife. The park, a former colliery site, has been designated a Local Nature Reserve and has wildlife including tufted ducks, kingfishers, and herons. Its heathland has green woodpeckers, common lizards, and tree pipits among its many species. The grassland has rare grasses and flowers including bee orchids, harebell, and field scabious, and the woodland includes broadleaved and coniferous trees. There is also a large fishing lake at the centre of the park at Vicar Pond that was created in the 1870s by the fifth Duke of Portland that is a popular spot for coarse fishing. There are a number of cycle and walking paths including the <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.sustrans.org.uk/find-a-route-on-the-national-cycle-network/route-6/" target="_blank" title="Sustrans National Route 6">Sustrans National Route 6</a> and the <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/media/105878/ashfield-and-mansfield-trails-east.pdf" target="_blank" title="Timberland Trail">Timberland Trail</a>.

Hundreds of residents visited Selston Country Park on Saturday 24 June for Ashfield District Council’s free open-air cinema day. The sun was shining on the award-winning Selston Country Park, as families and friends gathered in their hundreds to watch Minions: Rise of Gru and Top Gun: Maverick.
Children were entertained with giant garden games, an inflatable slide and bouncy castle, as well as free face painting and balloon models.

Families flocked to Hucknall Leisure Centre to celebrate the official opening of the new £2.7million family pool on Saturday 15 July. Ashfield District Council and facility operator Everyone Active threw a pool party, which was attended by dozens of local residents and Ward Councillors. There was also free face painting and balloon modelling on offer.
The council has now spent £5.5 million on Hucknall Leisure Centre, as part of a £22.5 million investment into the district’s leisure centres, which has transformed Hucknall Leisure Centre into a fully equipped, modern facility. The second pool is specifically designed for swimming lessons with a warmer temperature and a Poolpod for accessible entry.

Not even torrential rain could stop the party on Sutton Lawn for Ashfield Day. Thousands of visitors showed true British spirit as they wrapped up in raincoats and wellies, armed with umbrellas and a positive attitude, to support Ashfield District Council’s event on Saturday 5 August.
Despite the classic summertime weather and mud, stall holders lined the central path through the park selling everything from home baked cookies to bags, wax melts, and bespoke Disney-inspired ears.
The rain didn’t stop the funfair, or put off the visitors who enjoyed the rides, which featured adult and children’s rides. The fair also opened on the Sunday so people who couldn’t come on Saturday could experience a small part of Ashfield Day.
The event closed with tributes to George Ezra, Taylor Swift, and ABBA on the main stage whose performances were enjoyed by hundreds of residents. The final act on the stage, Ibiza Nights, truly brought the party spirit to the lawn. The night ended with wet, but happy, visitors dancing in the mud to classic Ibiza anthems.

Ashfield Day

Ashfield Food and Drink Festival returned to Hucknall High Street on Sunday 20 August, for its fourth festival celebrating the best food and drink producers in the East Midlands.
Visitors were treated to a huge variety of street food from around the world, independent beers and ciders, fresh cheeses, as well as gourmet cakes, brownies, and cookies. Festival-goers were also able to watch, interact, and try vegetarian food cooked live by a healthy eating chef.

Over 700 job seekers and students attended Ashfield District Council’s 2023 Careers Fair, which took place at the new Kirkby Leisure Centre on Friday 6th October. The Careers Fair brought together representatives from over 70 local businesses who spoke to attendees about a range of career and training opportunities. Representatives on the day included Heroux Devtek UK LTD, Amazon Rolls Royce Plc, Surescreen Diagnostics LTD and Aluminium Bending Specialist to name a few of the first time exhibitors. The event also had great support from local businesses such as Care4Notts, Ashfield Citizens Advice, West Notts College, Peter Smith Transport Training, and Boneham &amp; Turner, offering support for those wanting to gain new skills and start a new career journey. Ashfield District Council is committed to supporting employment and training in the District and will continue to champion Ashfield as the place to be for businesses and transformation. This also includes supporting residents to meet the skills needed as technologies advance and change as we move into the future together.

Ashfield District Council brought the festive spirit back to Sutton in Ashfield town centre with the return of its annual Christmas celebration event. In Sutton, event-goers were treated to performances from Leamington Primary Academy, St Mary Magdalene Primary School, Dalestorth School Choir, Regency Dance Centre, and Star and Stage, with a grand finale by Breanna.  The event had a Christmas market, and hot food and drinks to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. It concluded with the Christmas light switch on of the tree on Low Street, town centre lights, and 3D feature lights of a giant snowman illuminated on Portland Square.

It concluded with the Christmas light switch on of the tree on Lowmoor Road, town centre lights, and 3D feature lights with twinkling penguins.

The stage shows finished with a grand finale by Ziggy Pop. The occasion also included a Christmas market, and hot food and drinks to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. It concluded with the Christmas light switch on of the tree, town centre lights, and 3D feature lights. Hucknall Market Place car park became home to Charlie the polar bear, with the Christmas tree across the road on the High Street.

After the success of the Discover Ashfield Awards 2022, this year's event returned to Kirkby Leisure Centre to mark the achievements of 2023. There were eight categories to celebrate people, groups, places, and businesses across Ashfield within the last 12 months.  The awards were presented by Discover Ashfield ambassadors including the chair of Discover Ashfield, Martin Rigley OBE, vice chair Louise Knott, ATTFE College principal Liz Barrett OBE, and Pete Edwards, and the evening's entertainment was from local artists The Red Hot Band. Ashfield District Council celebrated the annual event of Commonwealth Day with a flag raising ceremony. The theme for the service this year was ‘One Resilient Common Future’. Commonwealth Day is held every year on 11 March, and marks the start of a week-long series of events and activities happening around the globe. Chairman of the council, Cllr Dale Grounds, hosted the ceremony outside the council offices in Kirkby in Ashfield. THIS EVENT IS NOW OVER, but look out for other events at Nottinghamshire Libraries. Watch the award-winning Broadway musical hit, On the Town, at a dementia-friendly screening of the film at Kirkby in Ashfield Library. The 1949 film features Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munshin as sailors on a 24-hour shore leave to see the sights, and includes famous tunes such as New York, New York.  This relaxed screening is particularly suitable for people living with dementia and memory challenges, and their family and friends - but anyone is welcome. Please feel free to talk, sing, and move during the screening. Doors will open 15 minutes before the film starts and there will be a 20-minute interval. The screening is sensitive to the audience's needs concerning lighting and volume, and there is a quiet space for anyone needing a brief break from the film in the main library.

Ashfield residents were able to view famous works of art in Sutton in Ashfield, as part of a free mobile museum tour across the UK.  The district was chosen as one of the places for the Art Explora Mobile Museum to visit, as part of a 12-week tour with Tate and MuMo. The mobile museum had a unique trailer designed by French designer Matali Crasset, and hosted the exhibition - Soup, Socks and Spiders! Art of the Everyday. The exhibition included paintings, drawings, photographs, prints, film, digital art, and sculpture by artists including Andy Warhol, Cornelia Parker, Damien Hirst, David Hockney, Dorothea Tanning, Fernand Léger, Nam June Paik, Phyllida Barlow, Roy Lichtenstein, Vanessa Bell, and Wolfgang Tillmans. During the week schools and community groups received guided tours of the exhibitions and workshops hosted by the Mobile Museum team. As part of this unique tour, Ashfield District Council hosted a free event in Sutton in Ashfield to view the exhibition and visitors took part in creative workshops, participated in arts and crafts, and listened to music by Inspire’s Red Hot Band.

Hucknall Festival 

The Willow Memory Café drop-in afternoon is held twice a month in The Discovery Room at Mill Waters Heritage Centre and Café, in Sutton in Ashfield. It is for people living with dementia, and for their friends, families, and carers.  Visitors can go on short walks, do crafts, or simply relax and socialise at this drop-in afternoon. Held every second and fourth Wednesday of every month, you can drop in any time between 1pm and 3pm.

We are excited to share with you The Big Sing and Dance, a partnership between Captivate, Inspire Music and Ashfield District Council aiming to enhance the current project, The Big Sing, by incorporating dance and more music.
THE BIG SING &amp; DANCE will take place on Monday, July 15th, 2024, at Kirkby Plaza, Market Place, NG17 7AL.
Groups should arrive from 12:30pm, and guests should arrive from 2pm. As part of the offer, you will receive:

<li>Resources to learn the songs and dances with your students.</li>

The Willow Memory Café drop-in afternoon is held twice a month in The Discovery Room at Mill Waters Heritage Centre and Café, in Sutton in Ashfield. It is for people living with dementia, and for their friends, families, and carers.  Visitors can go on short walks, do crafts, or simply relax and socialise at this drop-in afternoon. Held every second and fourth Wednesday of every month, you can drop in any time between 1.00pm and 3.00pm.
