Lindley's Mill

Lindley’s Mill is a hidden gem found at the centre of Sutton in Ashfield and one of only two stone windmills in Nottinghamshire, with the second at Warsop.

The mill has a fascinating history and is a Grade II listed building created in the 1820s by farmer, miller, and baker James Lindley.


The history and restoration
Built to replace a post mill damaged by a gale in 1818, the mill fell into disuse in the early 1900s. Prior to that it provided flour for bread and animal feed for livestock. All that remains is the stone tower that was restored in 2014 from Heritage Lottery funding that was used for new windows and a roof, and a small heritage centre.

A wooden floor was also fitted in 2015, partially funded by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (Mills Section). In September 2023, the flat roof of the building was replaced for a conical roof to help prevent water damage and the floor inside the mill was replaced.

How to get there
By car: At junction 28 of the M1, take the A38 exit to Mansfield/A615/Matlock.
By train: Sutton Parkway station (1.3 miles).
