Sherwood Observatory and Planetarium

Sherwood Observatory and Planetarium is home to the Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society (MSAS) and its famous white dome houses a 24-inch hand-built Newtonian Reflecting Telescope. The observatory was first opened to the public in 1986.

In November 2024, the Planetarium, along with the original observatory, opened its doors and welcomed its first visitors to the state-of-the-art facility.

The world-class centre has transformed what used to be a disused underground Victorian reservoir into a 59-seater Planetarium, showing a journey through space with immersive shows. The original features of the reservoir such as the intricate brick arches have been kept, preserving the history of the building. It also includes an exhibition hall, classrooms, and conference rooms. The planetarium is open for events, and education and pre-booked visits.

How to get there
By car: Sherwood Observatory is on Coxmoor Road (B6139) next to Coxmoor Golf Course – one of the highest points in Nottinghamshire. Leave the M1 motorway at Junction 28, take the A38 heading towards Mansfield until you reach the B6139.
By train: Sutton Parkway (1.6 miles).
Parking: Available at the Sherwood Observatory site.
